Yes it will be good enough for ducks, as long as you let them come in to the decoys and within effective range of your gun ( 30 yards IMO). I have killed several ducks and a few geese over the years with mine. I used 2 3/4" Magnum Winchester or Federal #2 and #3 shot for ducks and BB shot for geese. These were all Steel shot loads. I have never shot any Hevi-Shot or Steel alternative shot from my 870 20 gauge.

A 20 guage is definitely enough to kill ducks effectively. Like excalibur43 said, just make sure they come in before you open up on them. Use standard duck shot, steel #3 or #2, and you'll be fine. My dad used to kill ducks just fine with a 28 guage and still thinks I use overkill with a 12 guage.

I'm using a 20 gauge 870 right now, until I can save up fora franchi I-12. The 20 can definitley handle ducks. IMO, let them get closer than normal, and use a modified choke with #2's. Yesterday we had horrible luck... no ducks anywhere. But 2 minutes before legal shooting time was up, someone shot pretty close, and spooked up 3 woodies that were on the water. I guess they thought our mojo was other ducks gettin up, and they flew right towards us; we were even in plain view with the blind down. We let them get to about 25 yards, and I shot on the back bird, then the lead bird twice with no results. I should have waited for them to get closer, but I was getting antsy.

I love my 20 for duck hunting..Anytime I am hunting timber I use it.. For open water i will go with the 12 just for a little more effective range.
