boat hunting in open water
Does anyone here hunt without a blind? I have a 14ft lowe that is sorta camo painted. But do not have a blind. A long time ago we used to hunt like this in the coves in the Cheasapeake bay. I remember the birds flareing alot. In the past few years, I have been hunting out of a bank blind, or my buddy had a avery on his Jon. But he sold it, so I figured I would use my boat.

Unless it is a very low profile boat. I think you are not going to fare to well! Just make a blind. The cost for a useable blind for your boat should not be expensive at all.

I don't think you would do very well in a open boat. If I was in that situation I would get on the bank and cut some brush and take some zipties and add it to the the boat as good as possible filling the inside of it, standing it up on the sides of the boat and all around me where I was going to sit in the boat.

That's the way we use to hunt but finally realised a blind was the way to go try a Wileys Flex Blind they are way cheaper than the Avery and you can use it so many different ways.

Are you hunting divers? they arent the smartest birds around! If youve got some fast grass or something similar,, figure a waytoo lay it across the top of the boat and hanging over the sides.. Im sure youll get some shooting if you could figure a way too set something like that up.

I was wanting to go out a few times this week, but am sick as a dog right now. |

Nevermind, I found a webpage. The wiley looks tough to setup. Does the canvas go in the water? How does it handle heavy winds?

RE: boat hunting in open water
Its easy to set up just hooks on the back and front the bottom stops right at the water line and the material is rot and mildew proof. Just an alternative to consider.

Me and my buddy have tried a few times going out in his boat...its all camo but no blind on it. We have brought some of that camo cover tarp and made a simpleblind out of that and just stay low when the birds come in. We have been hunting otter point but haven't had much luck with geese but have got a few ducks out of it. U would get your best luck on a overcast day with some nice gusty winds and maybe even some rain. Ud blend in and they be flying low enough where they wouldn't even notice the boat till its to late.
U could always head out to the eastern shore and go into the seaduckzones...no need for a blind there! LOL |
RE: boat hunting in open water
the best thing would be to make a makeshift blind if you dont want to buy one is to find eather a camo tarp or get some mesh from a mil-surplus, get a couplerods like pvc or somethin that wont wrot. and something to ancor the rods to your boat then make a kind of a lean-to

RE: boat hunting in open water
My and my buddy use his jon boat to hunt woodies out on saltwater. We hunt on the edge of the marsh grass (high tide preferably, for many reasons). We have a homemade blind made from the grass. Rarely do we ever have birds flare.

Old tennis nets or some badmitten nets, four PVC tubes with C-clamps. Weave some camo grass in the netting.
