What choke for geese at 20-30 yards?

Remind me again what choke to use. I put a modified in there, but couldn't remember if I had a full choke in therelast year or what. Most shots are 15 to 25 or so yards, but range from 10 yards to 30 or 35. Mossberg 9200 semi auto...

Thanks!

I'd roll with a modified myself.

At those ranges I would use skeet or improve cylinder. When use steel shot or other non-tox alternatives patterns tend to be tighter. Over decoys I use the two chokes I mentioned and they are deadly. Remember the goal should be not how to kill a bird at 40 plus yards but how to kill more birds at 40 yards or less.

lol i cant really change because i use my grandpas gun (Remington 870) but it has a built in full choke in the barrel and i slaughter geese with that gun

IC would be my choice for that close

But it would be best to pattern your load

I keep a full in my 28" 870's all the time. I'm either gonna hit em, or not. Sailing birds in a tidal marsh can be a nightmare - hard on the dog, me, gotta get the boat now, birds working in and I'm not in theblind cause I'm chasing this damn cripple. Hit or miss, that's what I believe - and it gives you extra stopping power on the longshots.

To answer your question, I personally think a mod is fine for most any hunting condition, it's actually what benelli recommends as the tightest choke on their guns for hunting situations.

you could shoot an open cylinder at 20 yards and it would be deadly, however I think an improved cylinder would work better for you. Also remember.... You can't shoot steel shot through all of your chokes. I can't shoot steel through my benelli in anything tighter than a modified constriction.

I'm in the same boat with this guy! My full stays in for waterfowl. I got a snow and 2 blues today at about 25 yards with the full and 1625 fps kents.

i would recomend modi. keeps a tight pattern out to forty yards for most guns when shooting steel. like these guys are saying though, patterning makes all the difference
