I travelled from Alaska to Texas and Louisiana for some December whitetail and duck hunting. I hunted the opening weekend of the second split in Louisiana and experienced mediocre hunting. The snow geese and speckled bellies were available in huntable numbers but the ducks were not. Hunting in the rice fields around Gueydan, Louisiana were were fortunate to bag a handfull of teal and spoonbills but no mallards. In fact,I did not see a mallard or widgeon in two days of hunting. I guess the warm weather was keeping the birds up north.
