My girlfriend and I went with the VAWFA and the DGIF today on a banding project. Hit a bunch of local tidewater VA holes...including a few golf courses. All said and done we banded about 350 birds. Messy work for those who have never done it...and LORD but it was hot and humid out today! Had about 75 or so recaptures....likely almost all residents...as most of our resident birds have the same 0998 prefix in VA.

They dont fly away?
Nope. This time of the summer, the geese congregate on large bodies of water and molt. Just like a buck sheds his horns and regrows new ones each fall, after the gander are born in the spring, the adult geese shed their feathers and regrown new ones. Since the gander (baby geese) cannot fly yet anyway, and mama and daddy ain't gonna leave the young'uns behind), they molt while they raise the young. At this time of June every-year, the geese are for the most part, flightless. With the right amount of man power, and a couple of canoes...you can litterally round up over 200 geese for banding. Most are resident birds anyway, at least in my part of the world, and likely in CO as well.

Way up in the arctic, biologists will use rocket launched nets fired over bait piles to capture geese, ducks and swans. Same idea. Also, ducks are often caught in hen houses placed by biologists. At the same time, they can document nesting activity and nest success rates. All part of helping set regulations and track movement patterns.
