I was just reading on a waterfowl site about guys in illinois shooting woodducks the other day.. I would have thought they would have gone south already,, apparently not! It wouldnt hurt too get a half dozen woodduck decoys as well,, put them closer too the vegetation than you do the mallard and goose decoys,, seperate them from any other decoys. Dont bother with woodduck calls,, theyre either committing or they arent.. get ready too hammer them when they are over the dekes,, they usually only give you a good look and they are gone! very humbling duck,, they are tough too hit, very erratic flight.

get a good book on waterfowl identification. here is a good sitet too look at as well for id'ing purposes.

Welcome to the world of waterfowling , be warned it can be addictive.
If you are going to start out ,start out right. Better to buy a few good quality decoys than dozens of $h!t. On the low end look at the herter's or go for cork. In the long run you'll be way ahead. Good waders or some kind of boat, anything that allows you to properly place (you don't throw out decoys) and retrieve downed birds. ( Here is where a nice retiever is great)
As far as a shotgun, get what fits and feels good to you. 3" model is ok if you feel the need. Find a skeet range and shoot it low gun. Best game around to get your swing down. Learn how to properly judge distance. If I had a dollar for every shell that been shot at waterfowl and pheasant over 45 yards and outright missed or crippled birds that flew off to die I'd be a muliti millionare , and that would probably just be from this year alone.

Are those GHG decoys good quality for the price? To me they looked very nice for only 30 bucks.

You wont find a better decoy for the price of the GHG hot-buy mallards. Myself and a buddy went too cabelas 3 seasons ago and they had them on sale for $20 a dozen, we bought 5 dozen each. We use them for marshes, ponds and a small creek we hunt. I'd bet there has been 600 ducks killed over those decoys in the last 3 seasons. And if you happen too swat one or 2, who cares there only 2 bucks a piece!

Big water(the great lakes)we use Over-sized decoys just for visibility and rigging.

Goose decoys either Big Foots or Green Head Gear with flocked heads.

Here is another useful link if the water you hunt is shallow.

I would give you some info but everthing I was goona Say swampTHING has it covered the only one thing I would add is to get weighted Keel decoys. They work better in my opinion then water keel and also make less of a mess of having water everywhere. Good Luck

heck yea they are. i think ghg are thebest decoys out there when considering looks AND price. on a pond id go with maybe one dozen mallards, 6 wood ducks, 3-6 ducks of various types found where you hunt. dont call until you are good at it.

MOJO DECOYS ARE AWESOME! although any motion in your setup really draws em in. good luck, this is my first year trying it on my own as well.

If you or a family member owned it... id say dig in some 55 gallon barrels for blinds,
this is genius, but how could i pump the water out?

Pump it out with a bilge pump and battery. Put a roof over it when your done hunting. As long as its water tight it shouldnt leak. Problems I have heard is they may pop-up out of the ground, If metal you weld pieces of re-bar across the bottom forming an X sticking out a foot or so in each direction. If its a plastic barrel you pop holes through the sides at the bottom and slide the rebar through it, then seal the holes with caulking.

some different designs.

Howgood they actually look.(these ones are cement sewer pipes,, I wouldnt build one like thisthey areporous and would leak)
