Decoy Spreads
 

How many decoys do you hunt with on average. I will be hunting flooded fields and flooded riverbottoms. Possibly a creek if everything gets frozen. I am new to this and don't know what kind of decoys to use. Also I have heard about mixing up different species of decoys to attract more numbers of ducks. How many different species do you use in an average spread.

I hunt in manitoba, canada so i only have to use about two dozen mallard deekes!:D Of course i have a few mojo's on the side(motorized decoys), i would definatley recomend picking up one of those, they are amazing. If you are going for cheap, but reliable decoys GHG hotbuys are great.

electronic decoys work best and my friend hunts a setup like yurs and he uses only 2-3 dozen dcoys. mostly mallard, few black duck, few teal, one or two wood duck. mixes it up and he usually gets good results. i have heard that mallard decoys will work to bring in most type ducks tho.

Usually use about 2 dozen and a spinner. I mix mallards along with teal and wood ducks for color.

Depends what part of morth america you are hunting.. Cant go wrong with a dozen mallards, a dozen black ducks and a handful of pintails,, a couple geese wouldnt hurt either.

Usually the later the season the fewer the decoys. Down here in Louisiana we have until Jan. 29 to hunt. These ducks have been called and shot at all the way down. I only use 6 to10 decoys in my spread. Sounds like it's not enough but it works great for me. I do very little calling also. Most of the ducks are call shy. It's easy to tell which ones want to be called at and which ones do not.

I agree with super, i only use around a half dozen late season, they have seen every spread and heard every call by time they get down to where im at. And when calling, i only do a few quacks and maybe the occasional feed call.

Change it up late in the season. When I field hunt GEESE from now until the end of season, I figure that the birds have been seeing the same type of 'hook' or 'J' spread, and about the same # of decoysthe whole wayfrom Canada to Central IL.

I downsize the #'s of decoys,put them in small family groups spread out a little farther,stay super hidden, flag, and call very little. In the late season, the stupid birds are dead, and the ones still living have seem it all.

Think about what everybody in the area is doing, and do something very different.
