Great Illinois Goose Hunt - First Goose Hunt

Had a fantastic Norther Illinois goose hunt Tuesday in Lake county thanks to Ultimate Waterfowlers. It was my first goose hunt.
www.ultimatewaterfowlers.com

Sky's just getting orange & we've got over 80 decoys spread out in a freshly cut cornfield. Guide says that with the wind direction (out of the SW) he thinks that the decoy spread will get the geese to come in right in front of the blind - or on top of it.

7:50 arrives & we've seen many flocks - most too far or too large to bother with. Here comes a flock of 7 - close enough to hear the call & see the decoys. We call them in - they circle twice. Final approach brings them in right in front - 10 seconds later, we've got 4 down.

We retrive the geese & get set for more action. We need two more geese to fill out the tags.

8:10 & the geese are really flying now. The guide says that the flocks we are seeing really too large to call in. He doesn't want to educate too many birds. We eventually see a pair of geese in the distance. He calls them in - they circle - he calls & brings them right in - just like to first group. Both go down.

It's now 8:30, the decoys are loaded up & we're headed home. What a great morning.

I can see why so many of you love to goose hunt. The calling, strategy & execution. Really loved it.

You all that have the ability to put the location, decoys & calling together without a guide really impress me. Wow - lot's of work & a huge investment, but very cool.

&quot;It's not the kill, it's the adventure and challenge! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>&quot;

RE: Great Illinois Goose Hunt - First Goose Hunt

Justin, congrats man!!Glad you enjoyed your first goose hunt. Nothing quite like it , is there? I hope you are hooked now. I have been goose hunting for over 30 years and still get a rush everytime they set their &quot;landing gear&quot; for the final approach into the dekes. Don`t forget to try pass shooting and over water, but the best is still a grain field. My buds and I shot a lot of Greater Canadas this year. One morning we had 40 of them by 10:am as our limits are 5 each and there were 8 of us. I couldn`t lift my stringer, it was so heavy.Plus they make wonderful tablefare. Good luck on your future goose hunts. Mine is over for the year already but we had a hoot!
