Cripples

Here is the situation. You shoot a duck and your dog goes to retreive it. When he gets back the duck is still alive. What is the best way to finish off this duck quickly and effectivly?

Thanks

hold the duck by the body and strike its head against something , or theres a tool you can buy to finish wounded ducks

A quick bite to the head just to the rear of the eye is fast and effective.

RING THE NECK

Grab it by the neck and just start windmilling it untill you feel the neck snap.

Save the sport. Take a kid hunting twice and hook them for life!!!

***Check your local laws for legality, nor do I condone this but I've heard...***

Tie decoy line to its foot and an anchor and put it in your spread as a caller!

j/k

Ring the neck.

No question, wring the neck and keep going until you feel it snap otherwise the duck is in more pain.

drgildy, i thought you were kidding about the quick bite to the head, i even laughed out loud, but then i was watching the Outdoor Channel and saw a duck hunter do that exact thing. i couldn't believe it!
I hunt and have taken my share of game but to finish one off with my mouth, now that takes some Brass Cojones.

Wringing the neck can result in fatal neurologic trauma but it is often not a nice, tidy process. If even a minimal amount of cerebellar function remains and if the spinal cord is not severed then the bird might still breathe and could remain alive. To dispatch a bird efficiently one would do better to disrupt the oxygen delivery system. Notice that the birds you kill cleanly all have significant trauma to the oxygen delivery apparatus i.e., heart/lung damage. I suggest you put a heavy-duty plastic wire-tie (the kind used on electrical wires) around the neck and cinch it down tight. Then roll the bird up in a spare piece of camo etc. to keep it from flapping all over the place. Quick, neat, easy.

A friend who is a taxidermist has given me a list of what he needs to finish his showroom collection, he also gave me a finishing nail on a handle. You stick the finishing nail into the back of the head and through the skull. Its instant and you dont wreck the bird if there is a possibility of having it mounted.

Ring the NECK.
but I like Swamp thing's idea for possible mounts.
Ringing the neck does to much damage.

Have someone yell pull then throw it real hard! I eat all my birds so I prefer the sharp blow to the back of the head but is messy sometimes.
