Hello. I want to start getting into hunting.

What will I need? I know you'll need a shotgun. But what else?

first you need to take the hunter safety course. what state do you live in?

I live in MD. More specifically Havre de Grace. Will the DNR website have the class information? How much do they generally cost?

Usually they are free, but you never know. Yes that guy will be great for you, but i would recomend just getting the Stoeger 2000 it is a semi auto shotgun and they are very nice. Any other questions dont be afraid to ask, there are a lot of very helpfull people on this site.

So dont get an overunder?

you can but you only get two shots. i know some people who do use and over/under. i would prefer the semi though. the 2000 is a very good gun from what i've heard. i guess it's mostly what you prefer.

How many shots will I get with the Model 2000?

with the stoeger you'll probably get 4+1 or 5+1. i can't help you with the cz gun though.

I am apart of a duck hunting mentor program.
I have seensomeother mentor programs out therethrew DFG, Not-profits (DU), privet clubs or the best way is to find someone who you already know that hunts ducks.
Offer to pay for gas or something, make it a pleasure for them to take you.
If you don't have anyone you could always go on a guided hunt. Letthem know you’re new and would like some instruction. You should get a crash course.

I like taking out first timers, they don't have any bad habits yet and they listen.

BUT BE CARFUL, WATERFOWLING.........IT'S A SICKNESS

Yeah. I planned on taking the hunters safety course soon. And going out with my friends family this season. They will have an extra gun, and I'll make it enjoyable to them.

Just remember this, it’s the Number one thing we all hate when taking out a new guy.

Make sure you ask what you will need.
Do you need waters, rain gear, so onand remember tolayer your clothing.
I am sure they well take care of you. But don’t complain. Their are family they might just through you in the water. LOL

On that thought you might want your own life jacket.

What should the layers be? Like clothing in order.

Alright, for one you need the hunter ed class, then depending on the hunting you wanna do you need good boots or waders and some camo clothing that fits the terrain and climate you plan to hunt. Also depending you will need dekes and maybe some blind material, I used camo burlap for all around when I started and still do some...also you need to get familiar with your gun, prasctice makes perfect, that goes with calling....also it is an exspensive sport but you dont have to start by spendig an arm and a leg.....another tip is subscribe to some magazines/join DU, reads books and educate yourself, watch and listen to birds the list goes on and on but all of it is addictive!!!

Yeah. The class will happen soon. What do they grade? Like shooting skills. Because if they do I'll fail. And do I have to bring a gun, or will it be provided?

The class is a minim of 10hr. of class time, you will be tested on the materiel that the instructor will cover, most of it is commonsense and if a 9 year old can do it, I am sure you will no problem.

The best thing you can do right now is going shooting trap and skeet.
When shooting a shot gun it is not like a rifle, a rifle you aim. A shotgun you point. And it takes a little practice. Come up from behind the bird and as you swing throw the bird, pull the trigger about the same time you hit the head, keep your swing going do not stop the gun when you pull the trigger. When you do that it makes the spread of your shot fan out. It gives you a bigger kill zone and you will hit more birds, if you stop the gun you will dramatically lessen your chances of hitting anything thats moving.

I would hold off on buying a lot of gear right off. I am sure you will likeduck huntingand as long as you have some one that is going to show you the ropes, let them tell you what you will need. I am sure we all hunt different types of places. You will need the standard stuff like camo and decoys, but the guys that are taking you out will know everything you will need and who knows they might have some extra stuff that they have up graded and they just might give it to you.

Yeah. I planned on getting all my gear next year. I'll probably go this year to see if I like it.

Socks dont matter. Just wear warm socks. Regular socks or wool socks will work fine. The coat from the cabelas website looked pretty good. Get them in either MossyOak Shadow Grass or Advantage Max-4 camo. For boot just get something with close to 1000 grams of thinsilate and you should be good.

For the pants. Will like Carhartt brown pants be good? Are ducks color blind?

Are Mossbergs good guns?
