Sandhill Cranes

Has anyone ever hunted Sandhill's? I applied for a permit this year. Very limited number of permitshere in Montana, so I probably won't get one. I here they are very good eating. I've seen some mounts, and they are very pretty mounted. Just curious.

I live in texas and we do not have to have any permits to hunt them. Theres just a season andyour normal hunting license covers it.I have shot a few of them before while goosehunting with a fishing guide i know. They were on the ground and we stalked up to them.I do not know many people who hunt specifically for them.He eats them but then again he eats all kinds of **** (spanish mackeral, sharks, geese) i wont eat. Most people i know shoot them for sport. But I am not expert so I am not certain to whether or not they are good eating.

Here in Manitoba, Sandhills usually open a week before the regular waterfowl season. We are allowed to harvest 5 daily and 10 possession. As for eating them,my buddies and I find nothing wrong with Sandhills(both my boys love them too).Low and slow is the trick. I usually cut the breasts into chunks and add them along with some other goodies to my slowcooker for up to 18 hours. I also like to BBQ the breast meat(cut into thin stips and placed on a bamboo skewer).

Another thing, there`s just something to be said about shooting a 4ft tall bird.;)

I’ve never hunted Sandhill Cranes but a guy at work brought some in one time and had us try it. I found the meat to be very good.
