Saving Video

I worked a little with Final Cut this past semester at school. I have been working a little with some video editing, but the last video I made had really crappy resolution.
What are the ways you save your video to your computer?
This weekend I'm taking out a USB camera to videotape a turkey hunt, and I wondered what are the better formats to save it in to get better quality? I'm going to probably do some editing to it if I do some good, so I was just wondering what format to get the best quality when putting it on the computer?
What are good proportions? 640x480 1024x768
Thanks for all the help!

RE: Saving Video

I capture mine as an .avi typically. I always render a final version to .avi for a high quality starting point for any later renderings. Mpeg2 for dvd, Mpeg4 or .mov files for YouTube. 640 x480 is standard definition (4x3). 1920x1080 is high def (16x9).
