Nikon D40X

Picked up a new camera the other day, my old one craped out on me. Nikon D40X, I like the larger cameras, I got it with the extra zoom lens 55 to 200 mm. any thoughts on it? good, Bad?

I also have the D40x with the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses. I love this camera and have taken more pictures than I thought possible. I am building up a nice gallery of wildlife!

Can't go wrong with the d40x

good camera, but by all means, not a professional camera. if you're looking to shoot on a casual level, then it's a great litte camera, just be careful when out in the field as the body is not well sealed at all. the kit lenses are horrible however. especially if you want to use them in low light situations. here's my set up:

all nikon
D200
D100
D1x

10.5 2.8 fish eye
17-55 2.8
50 1.8
60 2.8 macro
70-200 2.8 vr

I've had decent results out of my kit lens (18-55) with my D40. You're right it's not a pro lens by any stretch of the imagination but for the majority of people it does a good enough job and is way above your standard point and shoot camera. Most 2.8 lenses cost more money than a lot of people's bows/guns and we all know where our priorities lay when it comes right down to it. :D That 70-200 2.8 VR you have is on my list for sure, but for now I'll have to settle for my 55-200 4-5.6 VR.

This is from my D40 with the 18-55 kit lens. Sunet in Juneau, Alaska this past August.

And one with my 55-200 4-5.6 VR maxed out @ 200mm

great shots. yeah, the 2.8 lenses are expensive, but i need them for concert photography. oddly enough, i usually don't shoot in the field, since i'm holding a gun. but i've been a professional photographer for 10 years, thus all the equipment.

I just sent you an email regarding the D40X. Thanks for any help in advance.

Before anyone rushes out and buys a D40 or D40x you may want to check out the new D60 that is just now being released. I don't think it's shipping yet, but should be in the new few weeks. From what I've read it's basically a replacement for the D40/D40x. 10.2 MP with some upgraded features like the auto-rotating LCD, dust reduction system for the sensor, VR lens included w/the kit, and a few other features. All in the same size 16 oz package.
