Your shooting ratio on doves
I don't know if a lot of other guys out there do this, but I like to keep stats in my mind of how well I do on the first shot, the second and (grimace) the third shots of doves. Kind of tells me if I'm using my first shot effectively, or just using it to "sight in" for the second shot (a no-no).
I'm not a bad shot on a trap/skeet range--can usually go out and bust 75-80%. But with doves I tend to hit about 20% of my first shot, 30% of my second shot and around 20% again on the third. The limit here in Idaho is 10 birds, and two boxes of twenty five 7 1/2's normally satisfy. Though not always. I never thought it was fair that the hunting season kicks off with the hardest bird to hit. ___________________ Before you reply, come up with something better than some brainless statement about "liberals". |
RE: Your shooting ratio on doves
On doves I used to average about 75% on my shots. On a trap range 23-25 is where I shoot. I haven't been able to shoot trap this summer but maybe able to get back at it before to long .

RE: Your shooting ratio on doves
I like to keep all my shooting stats in my mind too. I'm a hell of a wing shot in my mind - "A legend in my own mind", some might say. (Those guys at the ATA must not have a clue how to figure percentages!)

RE: Your shooting ratio on doves
I keep track of the ratio of birds to boxes. A few times I've gotten 7-8/box, unfortunately it wasn't for the whole day. I usually average 5-6/box. Last season, towards the end when the birds got wise and FAST, it was more like 3-4. A few times I've "unloaded" on a bird in frustration, but I can't recall ever dropping very many (or any) with the third shell. Thirty two days 'til they humble me for another season.

RE: Your shooting ratio on doves
the best i did was 14 doves in 23 shells.
that's an anomaly, not the norm. |
RE: Your shooting ratio on doves
Well its been awhile but last time i went the season wasn't that great because of the weather. I'd say out maybe between 40-60 % but hopefully this year will be better but i know i am probably alittle rusty. Good luck tomorrow everyone!

RE: Your shooting ratio on doves
Today's average: 3 shells:1 bird
Pretty pathetic considering I average 75-80% on the Sporting Clays course. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... --Wing |
RE: Your shooting ratio on doves
I average 1.5 shells per dove. I shoot year round trap, skeet and sporting clays with an overall average of 300 target per week shooting all low gun with a overall average around 95%+ in trap and skeet and 78-84% average in sporting depending on the course. I shoot everything low gun with a hold like one uses for live pidgeon or fitasc.

RE: Your shooting ratio on doves
haha...
umm... almost 50 shells, 7 birds? pretty bad, but im not used to the new gun yet. |
RE: Your shooting ratio on doves
I started out great this year. I was five for five, then 6 for seven shots. After that I don't really want to talk about it! LOL I did shoot my limit of 15 with 23 shells about 3 years ago. Of course the next day I used up more than 2 boxes getting my limit of 8 snipe. Now those are hard to hit.
