Ditch Birds
I was wondering what your favorite strategy is to getting ditch birds. We do some road hunting (mostly between spots) and we are never sure on the best way to get them. They can be so unpredictable. What is your favorite way, and also share any good stories you have about them.

RE: Ditch Birds
Never done it. I hunt Walk-in areas and don't think road hunting would gain me much respect from the landowners. when I see birds congregating in the ditch I usually get out of the truck and flush them hopefully into a field I can hunt. Then I park and put some dogs out and go after them. they are apt to move in the time it takes me to get where I saw them light but for me I like to watch the dogs work. Where do you hunt that it is legal to hunt the road ditches?

RE: Ditch Birds
I hunt in Iowa. You can hunt the ditches, but if it is within 200 yards of an inhabited building (human or animal) you have to get permission. Is not not legal to hunt ditches at all in KY?

RE: Ditch Birds
Not that I know of. Get yourself a good pointer, like a GSP and set him out int the ditch. Drive behind him. He should be able to hold some birds on point while you get up to him to shoot. BeSafe!

RE: Ditch Birds
spot bird in ditch - drive on by - turn around - let one man out - drive back slowly while hunter walks along being hidden by the car - when even with the bird, hunter stops and the car drives on - bird flys away - boom! BE CAREFUL! I really don't like ditch hunting, but sometimes it does produce birds. Jim

RE: Ditch Birds
This is what we do. Drive past the bird drop one guy off. Other guy turn around go past the bird. Get out, and box them in. Works really well, as long as you have a good life long hunting partner that will pass a bird instead of firing at you. And if the birds are sitting tight they'll usally fly the ditch down to your partner.

RE: Ditch Birds
Oh heres are story for ya. This weekend watched about 20 birds flying from the grove to the ditch. They were all running around, and me n my buddy did this. First one got up right in my face n i smoked it, then the rest got up out of range n flew right to my friend that got 2. We were about 200yrds apart. Also his 5 month old black lab flushed n retrived my bird.
