Sounds almost like that may be a 10 guage shotgun. I know 10 guage shells used to be made in a 2 7/8 inch shells. If you want to know for certain take the gun to a guns smith. 2 5/8 inch that seems weird if its a 12 guage I have seen 2 1/2 inch shells but never 2 5/8.

From the info given I'm not sure whom made the gun ,but the 2 5/8 " chamber indicates it was made for paper cases with a roll crimp instead of the full crimp poly case as we have today . I owned a Browning A-5 ,16 ga that shot 2 9/16" paper shells . I had to change the receiver block in order to fire the 2 3/4 " modern cases . They can be changed to take modern shells but it might be worth more to leave it alone .
