an airgun will kill a dove. but of course the shot will have to be well placed and at a close enough range. the .117 or .22 cal is plenty large to kill, but the 640fps really hinders you. you will have to keep shots pretty close to make sure you have enough to get through the wings on a side shot. on a front shot you should be fine as there is less to get through. the breast bone should shatter if you hit that and there should still be enough energy left to pennetrate further. the key is the kenetic energy. this is the size of the projectile and the speed it is traveling upon impact. the more speed the better in your case. so make sure you have an idea of how far that 640fps lasts. it may be less than you need for many shooting situations.

good luck. dove meat is great!

I Think if you are a really really good shot it would be fine. I think it will work.

very interesting question I was wondering the same thing . I have a crosman break barrel air gun rated for 825 fps. But I don't know if it would be legal in my state ?? the bird hunting regs are pretty cut and dryed.. hhhhmmmm I would aim for the head if I knew I was close enough never thought of a brest shot.. But our hunting regs say shotgun only guess that's how it goes out here on the left coast we can't even hunt cougar or bear with dogs anymore..

You better check your regs. I would almost guarantee you that hunting dove with a pellet gun is illegal. Especially since Dove are a Federal managed migratory bird.

If it isn't illegal it should be. The only fair way to hunt them is on the wing and you sure aren't going to get them with a pellet gun. If you really want to hunt them with a pellet gun I'd trap them first and then you can get close enough to kill them and not just wound them.
