Here in Virginia, the average size covey is under 30 birds. never shoot out a covey, always leave some birds there because most quail live and die within a two mile range. to answer your other questions, yes, they do like to LIVE in an area that has fields with cover around it, gives them protection from other animals, mostly fox.

I've read that quail need at least 5 - 6 birds to make it through a cold winter. I've seen coveys from 4 to 150 birds depending on species. Bobwhites are generally 12 - 15 birds but 25 not uncommon in good years. 30 or more is outstanding.

i live in north texas and bobwhites are plentiful. ive seen 5-almost 50 in a covey and they love the thick stuff. ive also hunted in west texas and blue(scaled) quail are more around that area. ive seen 4-damn near 100 in a single covey and they prefer thick cover too when the damn things aint running there butts off. hopes this help ya.
