I use to stock pheasants and quail on my hunting land and for the most part
they will stay but some will leave. Problem is that they are easy for predators
to pick off. However it is fun shooting and they are a tasty little dish.

We have alot of quail on my dad's farm, and my mom feeds them thru the winter by putting food blocks out for them. Any time we do any brush/tree clearing, we pile the brush in big piles, as they are quail magnets. The quail love to get inside of brush where they feel safe from hawks, owls, foxes, and other predators. Hope this helps, Good Luck

having a good food source on the property is a good thing
there are a few covies that we find in the same place every year. they are there year in year out beacuse the habitat is excelent -- food water cover it's all there with in a couple acers of each other
oh and we don't shoot every single one of them every year, that helps too

You need 2 main things. Food (as mentioned) and cover. Switchgrass, brome, or a CRP mix are great. For food, milo, soybeans, and corn are the best. Pheasants forever also has a mix. A wild covey is better than a pen raised covey. A pen raised covey has no survival instincts and you will be lucky to have a covey at all a month from when you release them, if you have predators around that is.

Most coveys live and die with a two mile radius, and never shoot a covey out. the best way to find out if you have more around is to go out early in the morning, just before daylight or just before dark and just listen, if they are there, you will hear them.
