Pay and place and usually pheasants for me. Ramsey SP and Jim Edgar SP. Jim Edgar has a wild bird area supposedly with both pheasant and quail. I've never hunted their wild bird area.

I heard Ramsey SP was good from a friend a few years ago, never tried it.

In northern or middle IL, you place the birds and let them go. It's not that great

In South Central IL look up Eldon Hazlet State Park just west of Carlyle lake. Its probably the best hunting in the southern half of the state. They are pen raised birds and are released daily into sections. The number released is depending on the number of permit holding hunters. We almost always kill our limit with a pair of good Britts. Its either sex also

You need the APH permit to hunt those national forests. Ive heard there are a scary # of hunters during deer season but Id think youd be safe now if the hog season continues after deer season ends. Going during the week would have far fewer hunters than weekends. Get ahold of the Big Thicket National Preserve. They may have hog hunting after deer season and its FREE No APH needed, just a permit.
