Best bird to start with?

I would like to know what bird would be best to start a 5 month old puppy with? My pup is 3 months old now but I plan to start him on birds around 5 or 6 months of age. Thanks.

My vote would be for the feral pigeon, for a number of reasons: they are easy & inexpensive to obtain, they are easy & inexpensive to keep, they are easy to plant, there is generally no season on them, so you can usually shoot them anytime, there is usually no need to have special permits, ect, from the DNR, they are easy to plant, they fly well, and sometimes you end up with some homers that keep coming back after training sessions, so your bird bill is further reduced. Good luck and good hunting.

Another reason pigeons are good is that if you make mistakes in training the dog tends to associate that with pigeons and not gamebirds. They make the transition to gamebirds later with no problem.

The above information is the best you could have received. Excellent post Mr. 16 and Dr. Dan.
