Why dog is so affectionate to man ?

Out of all species of animal kingdom, dog followed by cat, show maximum love, affection and intimacy towards man. What is the reason ?

If you want to make friends with a dog, rub bacon on your neck! :)

By nature dogs are a social animal. All dogs, no matter the breed, all are descendants of the Wolf. The Wolf is not really friendly to man. Man had to breed out the aggression in order to domesticate the dog. Even today, dogs can be breed for character, to be aggressive (I.E. watch dogs, guard dogs or heaven forbid, fighting dogs (Michael Vick knows this one)) Careful breeding, with those dogs for which we seek the right character, results in what the breeder is seeking. Different breeds of course have different character. The Greyhound for example is sleek and fast, breed it with the Rottweiler, which is a very devoted breed and aggressively protective of it's social "family" and you have what is recognized as the Doberman. The bloodlines of any breed can be traced in order to see how they were developed. Some dogs are just plain wild and very dangerous. But something tells me you already knew all of this.

Food and shelter. Lovable, but mercenary.
