Savage/Stevens 512 Gold Wing O/U for Christmas
 

My wife got me a gun for Christmas. Never owned an O/U before. I've got 2 870's in 12 gauge, an old Stevens single shot in 20 gauge, and a single shot Ithaca .410. This is a 12 gauge as well. Looking forward to getting to shoot it, but had a couple of questions.
Which barrel should be shot first? Top or bottom?
Does it eject the shells? It appears to just slide them out a little way, enough to be able to pull them out by hand. I've shot other double barrel guns and they ejected the shells. So does my 20.
Any advice would be helpful.

If the extractor/ejector is one solid piece it is an extractor. If its 2 separate pc. then its ejector. It will only eject fired shells if its an ejector type.

Remember free advice is worth what you pay for it! I (and most others) shoot bottom barrell first, they say recoil is less because it is lower in-line with receiver (how much 1" lol) thus getting back on trac if the first one misses. But the high end O/U from europe that do not have barrell selectors typically shoot bottom first.

As far as which barrel to shoot first, have the barrels checked for choke size, unless that info came with the gun. Most people would opt to shoot the more open of the two chokes first.. i.e. Modified before full, etc.., using the theory what you are shooting at is usually closest to you for the first shot, leaving the fuller choked barrel for the further shot should you miss and the object is now further away. Should they both be choked the same (which I doubt, unless it is barreled as a trap gun), shoot whichever barrel you are more comfortable with.
