leash/check cord...same thing?

RE: leash/check cord...same thing?
Nope, not the same thing. A leash should be short, from 3' upto about 6' long. It is used to maintain control of your dog, can be used while trianing the heel command. A check cord will be much longer, I' ve seen them as long as 35' and they are usually are made of a tangle resistant rope. Check cords used basically for many aspects of training such teaching whoa command or teaching to turn on command or " quartering" on commad. The longer rope allows the dog to work infront of you while you still have full control of the dog. The check cord also allows the handler to let the dog run, with the cord attached, and once the dog establishes point, then the handler can approach the dog, reaching the end of the check cord first, this allows the handler to maintain control of the point while still approaching the dog. Many other uses, but mainly the length of the two is the difference.
