What is a good dog for upland and waterfowl hunting. i hear labs and German short hair, but i would like to know better of the two or a different breed thanks.

For both waterfowl & upland, there is NO WAY you could beat a Pointing Lab.

I like my 2 pointing labs for upland and waterfowl

Depends on the type of upland hunting. If it is mostly pheasants, I would want a flushing type of retriever. Lab or Springer would be my two picks.

If it is more grouse/woodcock, a pointer like a GSP or Wirehaired pointer would work nicely. Flushers also work well on Grouse.

Only you can determine if you want a pointer or flusher. Either will work well on waterfowl with proper training.

Ole JW seems to be the resident dog man around here. Ask him about the "Versitile" breeds.

I'm sure there are others, but these are the ones that come to mind for me.

Thanks rb - but I stay kinda quiet as people are very breed specific. Keeps me out of trouble. :)

But if anyone needs help I have seen the differences bewteen quite a few.

i like LAB but,in my opinion they cant take heat.not their fault.
here in pa our temps are changing.can you believe its 60 degrees today.
it should be 10 above.
every year it gets WARMER and hardly any snow.

lab has hard time with warm temps.THAT IS ONLY FAULT I SEE WITH LAB.

i am trying a SMALL MUSTERLANDER this time around.
toby is 9=1/2 now .
gsp in my opinion seems to take heat better than lab.they go in water.
springer is great for pheasants.so is lab.
english setter is good on grouse but not water.
i am no expert on these dogs ONLY what i am seeing,i see a lot of different dogs hunting.
in fact,I AM ONLY ONE USING A LAB FOR GROUSE....
most of dogs i see are these 3.GSP,SETTERS,SPRINGERS.....

if i had to pick which dog i see most hunting,its the GSP...

I am retiring a yellow lab this year. She is the smartest, most well behaved dog I have ever had. She will hunt anything, but age is catching up with her. The dog before that was a Brittany, He was the hardest working dog I have ever seen. Would hunt forever if you let him. His only downsides where he wouldn't get into the water to swim and he really didn't like other dogs. the only thing he liked better than hunting was fighting. Made it impossible to take to a hunting camp. The only Brit I ever heard of like that though. The next dog will be a pudlepointer, just because I have heard they are very good and I have never seen one. I have seen more labs than anything else and the ones I have seen where very good hunters. I think they are tough to beat for versatility.
