Brittany pros & cons
 

I have been thinking about getting a Brittany to hunt with.
Any one have thoughts on their pro's and cons as a bird dog?
Any input is appreciated

Depends on what your looking for in a dog imo. Dogs breeds are kind of like hunters, each has thier own hunting style. Brittanys are generaly closer working than the other pointers. They are somewhat more timid mentaly than many of the larger pointing breeds and will not respond well to heavy handed training technics.
The best dog I ever had, hunting and companion wise, was a brittany. My next dog will be a Brittany...good luck with your venture! :)

Some brittanys can be all-age trials dogs, big runners. It depends upon the breeding. You're more likely to get a big runner if you concentrate on trial lines vs. hunting lines.

I hunted over a Brittany for 10 years, and she did it all.

Point, flush, retrieve and she loved to swim.

Always "ranged" according to the terrain.

She did get cold easily, but didn't mean she still wouldn't do her job.

I like the breed !!!

I have a Britt from field trial breeding and yes he will cover ground like an impala in open country but he also adjusts to heavy cover. My dog will hunt all day and ask for more and the only negative I canthink of is having to pick burrs out of his coat after a hunt. That is one advantage to a short hared dog.
