I like using #5 shot. I hunt over pointing dogs with open chokes at times it can be a longer shot than intended and #5 works well without putting to much shot into table fare. It also works great in early or late season instead of swithing from 6 to 4. If we come upon quail, woodcock, huns depending on where I am hunting I switch to 8 shot sellors&bellot sporting clay shells rather than field loads. I use FIOCHI golden pheasant #5 shot for pheasant. This combination has worked well for me and I feel confident not only in the gun I am using but the selection of shot which has been proved and tested under field conditons over and over any way it works for me. Check out the prices at Cabela' s or a local distributer in your area. I also would suggest buying just a box or two and see for yourself but I believe you will be more than satisfied depending on how your gun patterns the shot????? |

Ed,
I like to reload my own. I shoot 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 with shot mixed 5 and 7 1/2. Some of the guys in my club like the Fiochi' s and a lot of them use good ole Winchester AAs in 7 1/2 shot. Good luck and remember... what works best for you is best for you. Bob |
RE: Phesant loads
ohio that sounds like a great shell. Too bad they don' t manufacture it for the rest of us.

RE: Phesant loads
I shoot #5 shot pretty much exclusively on the occasions I go after wild roosters. Best load there is for pheasant. I like the Remington Express Long Range version in my 20-bore.

RE: Phesant loads
you need to call Mike at Baschieri & Pellagri of America (972)726-9073 or check out their web page at www.bandpamerica.com. These are some of the finest shotshells in the world and they are quite affordable. You do have to buy them a case at a time, though. The quality of the shot itself is probably better than anything you can buy elsewhere.

RE: Phesant loads
First i shoot remington shur shot, 1 oz. of 6s, at 1165 fps, last fall i shot over 350 wild birds from pheasant chukars huns quail(4 of the 6) ruffs blue grouse sage and sharptails, always with the same shell, they sell for upwards of 5 bucks a box.
Second i wouldnt shoot a winchester unless it was a double A, they have (winchester) have and still use cardboard wads and platsic wrap for wads. RANDY WEISER RIVER KENNELS |
RE: Phesant loads
I shoot a bunch of different stuff. I don' t have to many get away. A good dog helps with that. I like the #5 as well. I shoot a handload of HS6 from hodgden and 1 1/4 oz of shot. I loaded in old style winAA' s. I too took a number of pheasants this past year, both wild and game farm. I shot reolads, winchesters, remingtons, PMC' s (which are a great shell as well), and even though I hate them, Federals. [X(]Worst fouling, dirtiest burning, smelliest shells on the market[X(] JMHO

RE: Phesant loads
Well. What I do is buy some extra feds. 4' s for turkey hunting and use them pheasant. I think this works good because they have more power and i shoot them better through my gun.
Hope this helps Trk.Merc. |
RE: Phesant loads
I like Federal #5 in 12 gauge and Federal #4 3" mags in 20 gauge. I useually will buy a case of ammo in either #4,#5,#6 shot of Winchester, Remington, or Federal depending what my local gunstore has on sale. I have been useing Winchester #6 Supreme 20 gauge 3" mags with good success.:)
D@^n it is STILL May, little over 5 months till pheasant season:(, Come on November;) |
RE: Phesant loads
I hunt a lot of public ground and have to shoot steel, even at pheasant, so I use Winchester 3" # 2s. When I hunt where I can hunt with lead, my friend always uses Federal Pheasants Forever #5 and they (or he) are remarkable. When I run out of all the old lead I have, I' m going to get some of those Federal PF #5s for myself.
