Shot for forest grouse?

Picking up a new single shot .410 for rabbits, hare, etc..
My sled, squirrel, rabbit snowshoe hare dog has decided he wants to be a bird dog as well.

What shot recommendations do you all have for the .410?

It's a H&R Pardner single shot with a full choke.

I second the #6, I use 3 inch shells. Only a couple more weeks until grouse opens here in Idaho, my lab and I can't wait.

#5 or 6's 11/16 oz 3" i have had good luck w/ a mod to full choke w/ my 410

I agree. You could even go smaller then that if you wanted to. Grouse are pretty wimpy birds but are damn good eating!! There my favorites.

I agree with #6's....good all-purpose load for the quarry you mentioned. I've hunted with guys in northern WI that will drop to 7's and target loads for grouse, but I like a little substance to my shots...especially in the woods.

Jumping threads here, but I have a killer recipe for grouse breast that's marinated in 1/3rd amounts of dark beer, BBQ sauce, and teriyaki or soy sauce overnight. Then wrap eachin bacon, and grilled 'til the meats done and the bacon is crispy.Another reason to look forward to fall.

Yup grouse taste good, especially black grouse! No shortage of them here.
