Recently purchased my first hunting dog. A beautiful 10 week old female GSP. Looking for the best information about books, videos or just plain good advice on when and how to start training this pup.

For purely upland, a standard pointing book will do. Delmar Smith/Bill Tarrant book is known as the bible of modern methods. There's been alot of adaptation but the basics still remain, table work, chain gang, etc.

For waterfowl and upland, Joan Bailey's How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves is good introduction for a young puppy. This is a pre-sequel to NAVDIA book. There are a few items I disagree with like banging pots at feeding time (you can make use of other conditioning like recall, 'come'for feeding). But most of these are minor.

GSPs are versatiles. So, if you are going to hunt both upland and waterfowl then there are couple of commands you are going to teach it (sit - in blind, retrieve to hand). If this is the case, then follow the Joan Bailey/NAVDIA path and join a NAVDIA club near you.

Second on the Delmar Smith book. Some of the methods are outdated, but Delmar's approach to dog psychology is pretty darn good!

I agree on trying to find help from a NAVHDA chapter. There is a tremendous amount of experience and advice you can leverage from the membership.
