RE: HOW TO MAkE YOUR DOG SEEN
I've heard of hunters shooting dogs for running deer, but never for disturbing their hunting. That's a shame. The person that takes a shot at my pup while she's doing what she's supposed to do had better take me out first.
That being said, I'd look at the light vests. Anything you put on the pup is going to add to the heat, but since they don't sweat it shouldn't hurt. Particularly now that it's getting colder. I run my dogs with day glow orange collars from cabelas, they are like 15.00 with your phone number and address. I also run a bell from Lion Country supply, they sound like cows going thru the woods but better safe than having some guy shoot your dog.

RE: HOW TO MAkE YOUR DOG SEEN
My dog wears a Cabela's vest. She wears it for 2 reasons. 1st sunday trips to the vet to get stitched up due to barb wire fences get expensive really quickly. 2nd it helped make her more visibile in the field. Labs are a popular dog and when you get a few yellows out there running back and forth in the corn it's nice to have the vest on her for easy recognition. I can vouch that that it has definatly saved her from multiple trips to the vet. It's outer shell is torn up/ripped up from her going through stuff. Well worth the investment (which wasn't much) to keep the dog safe
Best picture I could find with her wearing it ![]() |

ORIGINAL: Phil from Maine i got to make him more visible. bell is good idea for hunters in woods but my problem,so far is ROAD HUNTERS hunting grouse, they just shoot. other time this week, roadhunter got out of truck loaded his gun, then i shot in the air, he left. i hunt along ROADS in morning here in pa. the grouse fly down for stones and water in culverts. as for collars, you really cant see them to good when sun is out and dog running thru brush even on BLACK DOG. as for bell,i dont think roadhunters will hear bell inside their trucks with engine running. but i do think thats good idea in woods away from ROADS,i am doing that tonight. |

RE: HOW TO MAkE YOUR DOG SEEN
I use a quick spot vest - just runs along the back and sides of the dog- belly is openand works well.....or youmight consider a beeper collar - that will make those guys think twice!
For your bell just use a big key ringtype split ring and runthe collar through the ring. Is what I do. JW |
RE: HOW TO MAkE YOUR DOG SEEN
my collars are about 3 inch wide or so.
today was first day with bell on, i like it . makes me feel a lot better. when i get near roads, i make sure i listen for truck and call my lab back to me. today, road hunters all over, i cant believe they spend all that gas riding just to shoot a grouse/turkey . some are drinking beer also and throwing cigarretes out window. these are ones that shoot at your dogs thinking they are coyotes from road. |
RE: HOW TO MAkE YOUR DOG SEEN
And if it is tha bad with Raod hunters and people who shoot from cars/truckscall the Game Warden and let him or her know! They'll get 'em!

RE: HOW TO MAkE YOUR DOG SEEN
I dont know how the heck they can afford to road hunt! I park my truck as soon as I can and for as long as I can. I think the bell helps, I dont like it because it gets old after a day but if it keeps the dog safe. I have a hard time with the vests for my dogs, they never stay on.

I have the Cabela's Chest protector for my pudelpointer. I only use it when we hunt public or when the fields are tall. Don't have a pic of it on her but this is the link to it from Cabela's...if it works. Her e-collar's got a locator so I don't use a bell. They work well too.

If someone's eyeing up my dog, they better think of dropping me first. |
RE: HOW TO MAkE YOUR DOG SEEN
so far, i am using high vis collar with bell riveted on it.
when i am coming out of woods now near dirt roads,i listen for road hunters coming and i call my lab back to me and put leash on him. just to dangerous .when i saw 2 roadhunters with can of beer in their hands, cigarettes smoking and no teeth in their mouths come by babbling out window,i am watching my dog much more careful now. what the h is this world coming too. |
RE: HOW TO MAkE YOUR DOG SEEN
If your dog doesn't range too far, the bell will probably work. If he does range far, however, the bell will interfere with him hearing any commands you give. I use the blaze collar plus we hunt with a beeper collar that I can turn on and off from my ecollar remote.
I also tend to keep my dog out of the woods during deer season. Too many stupid people in the woods. |

Too many stupid people in the woods. I use verbal commands and when need be, a whistle..my dog rarely ranges out any further than 85 to 100 yards max working between 2 of us. She'll stick closer with just me. My DT collar is black, so it doesn't help me color-wise. I'll probably use the blaze cover on her more. Bought it, might as well use it. |
RE: HOW TO MAkE YOUR DOG SEEN
I am glad you tried it, it works great for me using them..

Too many stupid people in the woods. last night,i have a deer buck decoy in my yard that i move around. everyone thinks its real, it a 8 point with 22 inch spread. i forgot to take it in. at 2 am,car with loud exhaust stopped, my dog was on bed with me. he started to growl. i opened window and saw 2 young kids trying to back their car up so they could put headlights on buck. they said,THATS IT A LITTLE MORE, EASY, EASY. then they saw me and said,HEY, GUY WITH HIS ******* HEAD STICKING OUT WINDOW. i think they were going to shoot that buck, grab it and run. these are kids that are still in school, you believe that,2 am and riding around . these are also kids whose pictures are in paper with HUGE BUCK. they are great hunters, for sure.............. |
