the labs we have all get tired in about 2 hrs or so..the englsih setters i have seen can go all day..i like that about setters..

black in labs seem to be bothered by heat..i think build of lab is not meant to be dog that can hunt hard all day running in woods or fields..also i think the setters nose is better than labs..

i have friend that runs local kennel here in pa..he told me that setters will get 7 out of 10 birds when compared to his labs..he has both, setters/labs..he said its way the dog breed is, lab holds its head different than setters to get scent of bird..

setters can get at grouse better than lab but if you read my experience between the 2 breeds, you will see i like LAB over setter because they hunt CLOSE and after grouse are shot at and leaves come off,grouse over 20 yds away flushing is 1 tough bird into get..

other dogs cant seem to get birdto hold until you get there 50 yds out in front..a Pointing dog ,lab or setter that hunts close ,20ydsis dog i want to hunt behind..

I think I must have missed your point, we all have hunting dogs we like and enjoy and hunt them under different parts of the country. As well as different conditions and most like to hunt with our style of hunting as well.

As far as heat goes with black labs, I hunted the Cali/Az dessert with no problems. If a dog can hunt in 115 degree heat, I think that you will be fine.
There's one too. Foot up, tail strong and on point!

Good looking labs, I hope you keep a lot of water on hand if you are hunting them in 115 degree temps. you couldn't get me away from my AC
in temps like that let alone hunt my dogs.

what do you feel makes your labs able to take heat??our temps in oct here are around 60 degs max..all our labs get wore out in about 2 hrs or so..

they are in good shape also..at preserve i see same thing, labs tongues hanging out..

this is only problem i see with our labs is they tire out..

To answer sproulman, My friends and I just hunted. I don't know what the difference was with those dogs, but when I lived in San Diego we had lot of warm weather. Training in 80 degrees or more was common. Come the dove opener the dogs had already been exposed to plenty of heat. We also hunted on the Colorado River. The dogs would take care of themselves. If they got hot, they went for a dip. The heat was never really a big problem for us. Hunting quail and pheasant was also common in high temps. I think it was just the norm. We hunted a Chessie and two black labs and the dogs would out last the people.

iv got a lab its my first dog he's a great all around dog my hunting buddys have a gsh and a springer my dog will run them both into the ground buy the end of the day but the other to are good dogs to but mine gets alot better work out becaus i live in the country and he runs all day they live in town and have to keep them in a kennel when there at work i have never hunted over a pointer but every one that has seems to like them
