RE: PHEASANT without a Dog
CodyDawg, woul like you to show me where I said that most of my birds fall alive......... Oh yeah, I didn't say that.Probably 65 percent of the birds we get are dead when we get to them. We have to live in a realalistic world, where most of the animals we shot are not going to just die. Of course I guess no one is quite the the shot like CodyDawg,(Probably a world champ), who seems to be saying that almost all of the birds he shoots are dead. Where do you get off saying that me and my hunting partners are bad shots. When I said most of the birds that hit the ground ran, I meant the ones who are still alive. Even some stupid birds that are still alive will just sit where they were shot, but not a smart one. If this comes off mean, sorry, but I don't like it when eople assume their better then others with out even meeting them.

RE: PHEASANT without a Dog
Jackel,
First of all, I never said you were a bad shot. In fact, I suggested you might want to use a bigger shot size, which means that I acknowledged that you "hit". Jackel says "CodyDawg, woul like you to show me where I said that most of my birds fall alive......... My response.... you said "With out my dog, we wouldn't have found 85-90 prcent of those birds". A dead rooster does not run. That means 85-90% are hitting the ground alive. 85-90% sure qualifies as "most" in my book. Then, Mr. Jackel, you start in on my shooting ability. Exactly where did that come from? C'mon, Jackel, I did not throw any mud at you, in fact I tried to give you a little advice based on YOUR comments. You did come off mean and I am offended by your comments. Nowhere did I say I was better than you at anything, in fact, I don't believe I said anything at all about my abilities. First you blast guys for hunting without a dog, then you blast me for responding to your words, then you start calling me names (world champ) and questioning my abilities in a sarcastic response. That is not what these guys were looking for. If you have only hunted with dogs, then you don't know what it is like to hunt without one, what can and can't be done. That was the intent of the post and let's leave it at that. |

RE: PHEASANT without a Dog
Codydawg - You made some good points in your postings. I wouldn't waste my time with jackel. Teenagers think they know it all and will argue about the color of the sky. I remember being one of those myself. A few years down the road there are some rude awakenings waiting...

RE: PHEASANT without a Dog
I never said hunting without a dog was a bad thing, just that I wouldn't do it. Im sorry codydawg for being a idiot, I don't know why I saud that stuff. I assumed that you were calling me a bad a shot, so I got defensive, sorry.

I think even those of you hunting with a dog could give us "dogless hunters" :)an idea on what rout to go to increase our chances. Toons Safty Is # 1 |
RE: PHEASANT without a Dog
In the 3 times that I have been Pheasant hunting this year my dog has caught 3 wounded birds, I have only shot 2 so he is 1 ahead of me I don't like it because every time he catches one it's one less bird that I can shoot but I don't want to leave the bird either. Also, 2 times we (actually he) have found downed birds for dogless hunters.
I like to invite dogless hunters, that we see in the field, to join us. Last Thursday 2 guys joined us and they both got their limit which thrilled me as much as the 1 bird that I shot. Last Saturday I teamed up with this fellow that had a 7 month old lab because I thought it would be fun to see the dogs work together. It wasn't, all that lab wanted to do was hump my springer it just kept following him through the brush and jumping him every time he slowed down enough. I kind of thought it was funny for a while but my dog was NOT impressed! Jackel, I am going to move to WI soon (pheasant hunting being one of the reasons why), what part of the state do you get all that action? Are they wild birds? What kind of a dog do you have? Any other WI bird hunters here? |
RE: PHEASANT without a Dog
Springer2000, I live in the south eastern part of wisconsin. I usualy go to places in the northern kettle moraine, and in theresa marsh. I won't tell where I go, because these are money spots, but there are many public grounds so I wish you luck. I have a 3 year old yellow lab. His father was 5 time national champ. Most of the birds are pen raised, do to poor cover and depleating land. The hunting is still good, but most of the birds are pen raised, but they can still give you a challenge.

RE: PHEASANT without a Dog
Pen raised birds? I do a little pre-season guiding on pen raised birds, and believe me there is a huge difference between wild birds and pen-raised ones. Hardly even the same species.

RE: PHEASANT without a Dog
Here's a little trick that can work on pheasants, for theose with and those without dogs. Most hunters will pull up and park at the same location as the next guy to hunt a particular field, so, the pheasnat learn that as soon as they here the car doors slam, they head to the other end lickity split, right!! So, when you pull up to that particular spot, such as a driveway to the field, drop off a couple blockers, and drive away and go to the other end of the field and hunt it back to the blockers. The blockers will need to stay still and quiet, and they will have action once the walkers near the end. The walkers may very well have action as soon as they begin, do to the pheasants running to the far end of the field when you first pulled up and the blockers slammed the doors. Try this, it works!
