When i was young, there was a grouse that would chase us on a small dirt bike while riding in the woods by the house. The bike was a Honda XR 75. I believe it was spring time or early summer. When you would stop the bike it would walk up to within a few feet of you.

I think the grouse was confused by the sound of the engine. It was loud and had a thump, thump, thump sound to it. The grouse must have thought it was another grouse drumming or something.

It was kinda cool having that thing run up to you out on the trail like that.

About 2 years ago one kept coming up to some wood cutters everyday
that they would go to work. It would sit in there lap when on the skidders or in a pickup or what ever. It seems that once in a while a few do not mind people to bad. After bird season that one was never seen again,
and no one is sure what had happened to it. But, the guess is probally some hunter strayed along and unknowingly shot it.

Ruffed grouse are extremely tasty... Sautee em in a bit of butter salt and pepper then cover in Cream of Mushroom soup and simmer till tender UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

in parks ruffed grouse will get relatively tame easily, they get used to people and will come to them, this can be a bad thing though because you get some people that will grab them and break there necks.

they are a very tasty bird, they are probably tops on my hunting list.

Grouse here in Ct. are as rare as carrier pigeons, public land anyway.Still fair numbers on some of my private properties.Real shame, many factors to blame, very complicated issue.
