Pork, I have actually heard of some people having good luck in some areas around Dubuque. I haven’t had a chance to hunt it myself yet. It really surprises me that there aren’t more birds in your area around Madison. There seems to be a little more land that isn’t farmed and completely cut down like around me in DeKalb, Illinois.

Can't tell you. I'm from here in western Iowa. I do some part time guiding on private lands... lots of birds but I've never counted. If I'm guiding I alot of times don't carry a gun... Just like to see the dogs work...

James: One word for lack of birds: pressure. There are some nice places to hunt around here, but there are also a lot of people to hunt them. Even the "secret" spots are coming harder to come by.
Turtle: You bring up an excellent point. In my case I don't hunt all season for a couple of wild birds to feed the family.
I enjoy being out of the office in the fresh air, with my dog (and my son), watching the seasons change and the dog work.
Good hunting to all.

I used to measure my season by the number of days I limited, or how many days I took a mixed bag limit. Much like itsmyturtle, I go out to work with my dogs. I spent three weeks back in my home state and hunted every day. Got some birds. I like to think of it as 20 days of success. And my boys really kicked butt.

If you are shooting pen raised birds, you are not hunting, you are training. If you do considered shooting pen raised birds as hunting, then you are probably a guy with lab or retriever breed.[:'(] The rest goes without saying.....
