RE: Mossberg 500 vs. Remington 870

I have a moss 500 and I have to say that I love it. I have shot thousands of rounds through it and never had a problem with it. 2 years ago I fell through the ice pheasant hunting and soaked it, got home and forgot it in the gun cabinet, the next year I checked it out and only had 1 small rust spot on it... The only 870 I have ever used was an older full choke one and I didn't like it much.

I have one bro with the 500 and one with the 870. I personally like the 500 better. Its shorter barrel is nice and the positon of the saftey is awesome. Well for me at least having the saftey on top, is convient and eaiser to deal with when bringing the gun up.

Just one thing to consider

Mossberg 500s are junk. The safety screw loosens up and then gets stuck in SAFETY OFF position. Then you have the readjust the safety screw. I have owned 2 in the 500 model. One 12 ga., one 20 ga., had the same problem with both. I have since moved up to real guns. Spend a little extra money, it will be worth it in the long run. Benelli SBE II in 12 ga, and in 20 ga. the Franchi 620 and an 870 LW special 20 ga.. MOSSBERGS ARE JUNK!!

There is nothing wrong with the 500, but I definately prefer the 870.

You might look at paying "new" price (or close to it) for a nice model in great condition. Take someone along who knows how to tell if a gun has been cared for. Why? Because few things feel better than an old pump that has had tens of thousands of shells put through it...they wear themselves smooth. No complaints with my 870, but I have an old friend who let me shoot some clays with his real old 37 and it was like night and day. My 870 is a 12gauge and my dad has/acquired one in 28gauge. Both are wingmasters but the older 28guage is noticeably smoother and easier to "shuck" than my 12gauge.

Now there's a gun that brings back memories. Ithica 37, 20ga featherlite. Before the adjustable choke was added. :) Loved the bottom ejection.

In my opinion, both the 500 and the 870 will work just fine for your hunting needs. I have heard many people say both good and bad things about the mossberg 500's. Sometimes you will find guns with problems but thats like playing the lottery when you buy a mossberg (some of them just have issues) I own quite a few of each, I have no problems with my 870's but I do have 1 cycling problem with 1 of my 500's (I have found alternatives to this) I can either use certain brands of shells or I can just bring out my 870.

As far as quality, I have to go with the 870, some will argue this till they are blue in the face but when you really look at it the 870 wins all the time.

But for hunting, either will do just fine for your hunting needs. GOOD LUCK HUNTING;);)

if I
had to pick one between those two I would pick the 870. I have shota couple of them and the 870 cycles nice and feels great too. The 500's that I have shot felt like they were going to fall apart in my hands. But the Mossberg 835 is my favorite, it shoots great, feels great, is resonablypriced. I have never had it fail on my while hunting. It has been covered in mud andit cycled perfectly. I own one that is all camo and its great becuase I don't have to worry about rust getting on it. I've hunted in a rainstorm and there wasnt any rust on it. It has a 24 in barrell on it which is nice when hunting in thick brush and even when duck hunting. The only problem with the short barrell is its kind of loud.
