Have to admit that although I am a direhard shorthair fan........for pheasants and grouse you would be hard pressed to find any dog that can perform better than a good springer spaniel.......they certainly are at the top with pheasants and are great with grouse as well......they also do great with rabbits and can handle moderate weather ducking........great dogs.............good luck

Well you got six pages of input so I'm sure that will make your decision easier. Now for mine, for what it's worth; I have had labs, brits and Shorthairs and a Weim. All of them have been very good dogs and my GSHP was great. My weim now is 9 yrs. old and I keep finding myself looking over shorthairs when the time comes for a new dog. They just have great heart and truly love to hunt, almost every GSHP(except for one)I have had was very easy to train and just loved to hunt.I have used them for woodcock, grouse, waterfowl and pheasant hunting.

The best advice when it comes to bird dogs is to find a good reputable breeder who breeds a dog that suits your style of hunting.
Tellling someone what is "best" is in error IMHO. I've seen bad dogs in about every breed and great ones too. It's like picking out your wife or girl friend , beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
