RE: Iowa Pheasants
Good info from porknbeans. Jared, I live near Davenport. Ten miles north of Davenport their is a very big public hunting area. I feel since it is so close to a metro area, it gets hunted pretty hard. With it being only 2 hours from the west suburbs of Chicago, you could give it a try. Good luck.

RE: Iowa Pheasants
Thanks for the help guys!!! I will definately try to get out there.

RE: Iowa Pheasants
Me and three buddies went to southwestern iowa for a three day hunt and we killed 29 birds. First two days very windy!!! Seen a ton of birds. Pretty good dog work considering conditions.

RE: Iowa Pheasants
SilverGSP - Those birds don't have a chance with the four GSP's on the ground. Nice pictures. Ther are birds everywhere this year. With the snow you can really find where they are at now. Makes it much easier to hunt and find game. Going to a spot on Saturday that the owner only let's me hunt once per year. It is good!!!
|
RE: Iowa Pheasants
Birdy - If nobody hunts it all year that means that you should hunt with a buddy. I mean after all, if you fall and get hurt nobody will find you until next year. I know CPR and first aidAND I'm available this weekend. :D;)

RE: Iowa Pheasants
Wow porknbeans
I was thinking the same thing. What if there was a snow slide and you both get stuck Me and my dog sure would love to be there to help. Or what if worse happens and you hit the field and you get your limit to soon. That is no good for the dog. He needs the exercise. So if we had more people there that would raise your daily bag limit up. LOL JK Have a great hunting weekend. |
RE: Iowa Pheasants
Porknbeans and Silver GSP, You guys are funny. Went and hunted it this weekend. Dang it was cold. The birds held tight, was done in about 1.5 hours. Their was actually a friend I take so their was two limits to get. Walking back to the truck withour bag limit, the dogs go on point, and what do you know, a covey of quail get up. So we hunted up the singles for another two hours, picked up six of those little rascals. What a day in the field that was. I'll never forget that day.

RE: Iowa Pheasants
Fine, fine, I've bet shot down before. But remember, if you ever need a buddy to help you recount those memories, give me a call. Congrats on a great hunt. I actually ended up going up North for a hunt this last weekend. It was 1 degree when we started. Fortunately, the area we hunted had a tree line that blocked most of the wind making for near perfect winter scenting, hunting conditions.

RE: Iowa Pheasants
well i got 167 and there is bout 2 weeks left to go so i hope i hit 170

RE: Iowa Pheasants
Congratulations! I'm going to try to get back to Iowa for one more weekend before the season ends. I'm looking to get out around the Cedar Rapids area. Good luck for the rest of the season.
|
RE: Iowa Pheasants
Porknbeans, you should have a good hunt in the Cedar Rapids area. Their are good numbers of birds in that area, as I know because I get over that way every once in a while. Every time I have been to the area, I saw big numbers of birds.
Good luck!!! |
RE: Iowa Pheasants
Based on my calculations for 700bdl870exp. He is over his limit for the year. Their have been 54 hunting days in the year so far, multiplied by three birds per day...that comes to 162 pheasant. He says he has taken 167 so far this year.
He needs to explain. |
RE: Iowa Pheasants
Birdy, you got me thinking I should look back at700bdl870exp's posts from the beginning of this thread and this is what I found out as far as possable legal birds compaired to his count.
max/700bdl870exp 11-14-2005 51/42 11-15-2005 54/45 11-16-2005 57/47 11-20-2005 69/66 12-05-2005114/132 12-20-2005159/167 On 12-05-2005 he reported being 18 over thehighest possable daily limit for the year.Taking into account the number he reported on 11-20-2005 he was 21 birdsover his highest possable daily limit andkilled an average of 4.4 birds per day since 11-20-2005.Remember this would mean he would have to hunt every day since 11-20-2005 and he would have still averaged taking 1.4 birds over his limit every day. Since 12-05-2005 he has taken 35 birds an average of 2.3 birds per day. I too would like to hear an explination. I wonder if the DNR would like one as well? |
RE: Iowa Pheasants
I have been hunting the Cedar Rapids and, West Branch Area most of the winter. There are a lot birds out there. The only problem I am having now is the birds are so jumpy that even having dogs does not help. They are getting up 100+ yards a head of us. We have been posting people. Nut you know how that is sometimes you get lucky with where they fly most the time you don't. lolThis freezing snow on the ground is Really hard on the dogs too. Might be a good time to start road hunting. But I don't want to be the one to tell my dog that!!!!

RE: Iowa Pheasants
I'm going to try to get back to Iowa for one last hunt the first part of January. I'm going to be in the Tama/Cedar Rapids area and the news about the birds getting wise isn't good for me. Why can't they just stay stupid?! :D
Good hunting to all and a very Merry Christmas. |
RE: Iowa Pheasants
I've been splitting my time between pheasant hunting and late muzzeloader deer. I have been seeing plenty of both! I can sum them both up with two words. Food Plots. That's where I've been finding them. The snow is almost gone and the hunting is a little better than it was a few weeks ago. The birds have been holding a little tighter again. Two three day weekends left for me. I figure four days of pheasant and two deer. I will look for a nice buck one more day, then shoot a doe to fill out if need be. I am enjoying the pheasant hunting more with the milder temps and lack of pressure.

RE: Iowa Pheasants
My take on 700bdl870exp is that anyonewho pretty much posts only to give his bird countand gloat is probably full of it.
|
RE: Iowa Pheasants
Ouch! That's a little sharp. I'm not denying what you are saying is wrong or right. What I do know is that the guy is young and we have all made mistakes in our youth due to our ignorance and brivado. Since I haven't seen a post from the guy in some time, I'm going to guess that he learned his lesson.
|
RE: Iowa Pheasants
yes, I know that was kind of sharp, but guys who over shoot there limit or sky bust, etc. just get to me. But then he has the nerve to come on here and brag about it. But you are right, I should probably keep opinions like that off the board. I went back to my post and deleted the part that was a little too personal.

RE: Iowa Pheasants
[:-]In Mn. party hunting is legal, meaning, you can work on your hunting partner's limit if he didn't fill it!
Is IA. the same? If so, there's the missing piece to the puzzle on the kid slaying the crap out of the birds! My hat's off to him, if there's a lick of truth to it! The limit in MN is only two/day, so, to bag your hunting partner's two would be just a tad selfish to begin with IMHO! But, that's the rules, and I'm sure there are those that have that spirit to do somethinglike that, which isn't ALL bad, at least as long as everyone goes home with birds to eat! Funny thing, party hunting isn't allowed for dove and waterfowl, but, for the upland species it is! |
RE: Iowa Pheasants
"Party hunting" is not legal in Iowa. I wouldn't want to hunt with someone who shoots my birds for me anyway. I just see the kid as wanting some attention on here. Lets not burn him at the stake.
|
RE: Iowa Pheasants
I'm betting this kid hunts mostly alone or with other kids his age. This is a shining example of why everyone should take a kid hunting. Teach them the right ways of hunting and ethics. I bet he would be an enjoyable person to hunt with given the right quidance.

RE: Iowa Pheasants
I'm going to head into Iowa for one last weekend of hunting. I'm going to be in the Cedar Rapids/Tama area. How have the birds been and where have people been finding success?
|
RE: Iowa Pheasants
Hey porknbeans - do you hunt private or public land in that area - I've been thinking about heading out that way next year and was just wondering how you go about finding places.
By the way, I read one of your reviews on another pheasant website on one of the smaller clubs near Janesville/Madison. I gave them a call and am probably going to hunt there this Sunday. Your reviews on that site have been really helpful - thanks. |
RE: Iowa Pheasants
waterfowler
Thank you. Your comments are very nice to hear. Regarding Iowa: My wife has an uncle that lives in a little town between Tama and Cedar Rapids. I'm hoping he can set something up on private land or point me to some good public land. I also make a trip in early November to the Northwest corner of Iowa and hunt strictly private land. I have to admit that this hunt is with friends who live/work in the area and thespots we hunt areamazing for an avid uplander. I do know that the Iowa DNR has a website that I have used to look at public lands. Drop me an email and let's try to work something out for R&G's this year. I only live 10 miles from there and go back as often as my checkbook allows! Take care and thanks again. |
RE: Iowa Pheasants
Porknbeans – that is nice to only live 10 minutes from there – I talked to one of the kids and he seemed really nice. He said no one else is hunting there on Sunday – so we could hunt all day if we wanted to and would be ok with only a 2 bird release per gun with scratch birds only $10. The cover he described sounds really nice too – I like hunting Sorghum, it slows down my 1 year old Boykin a little. He is still learning and sometimes gets too far ahead of me when he gets into a field that doesn’t have thicker cover.
Anyway, I would definitely be up to getting together for a hunt. If I remember correctly, you have a Brittany(s) and I am seriously thinking about getting one so that would be nice to get to hunt over one. Have fun this weekend and I will drop you an email sometime soon. |
