Woodcock & grouse in Vermont

Had a pretty successful day on Saturday. Missed a bird in early on but then went 3-for-3 on a woodcockfollowed by2 grouse. Shot on 20g 870 wingmaster. No dogs, just two of us walking through the woods. My hunting partner also came home with a woodcock.

My2nd grouse was a long distance sweeping shot; maybe my best shot yet. I was pretty glad to see him drop!

Looking forward to good eats this week!

Nice shootin'. Where abouts in Vermont. I live in Bennington and down here most of the woodcock seem to have vanished. Still a pretty good amount of grouse(or partridge as I call them). Do you still hunt of hunt behind dogs?

Whoops, I just saw where you said no dogs. My friend has a German Shorthair we sometimes take along.

Nice!! I've seen a lot of birds this year, but I've been a little too slow on the draw to bag any. It seems like if the bird surprises me I can forget about it.

I've never hunted pheasant, but judging by what I've seen on TV it's vastly different. Grouse tend to like thick cover, often deep in the woods. If there are apple trees around, those are a great place to look for them. I miss a lot more than I hit. But that could just be me.
