Brood survey shows high numbers of pheasants

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -- The annual pheasant brood survey conducted by the state Game, Fish and Parks Department shows a bumper year for the birds.

Results of the statewide survey show 6.6 pheasants per mile, the highest number of birds per mile in 40 years, GF&P officials said Friday.

Pheasant numbers increased 21 percent from a year ago and are 74 percent higher than the 10-year average, the GF&P said.

The department uses the brood survey to provide an estimate of the pheasant population ahead of pheasant hunting season. The regular season this year starts Oct. 15.

RE: SD Pheasant Brood Survey

definately more birds than last year. I live on a farm in south central sd and we have had great pheasant hunting in the last 8 years or so. Last year was terrible. we used to have no problem in limiting out easily butlast year around us it was hard. this year definately looks better. cant wait till oct 15 but dove does open the 1st so have to go out and get some practice in.
