Locator Calls

Do I need a locator call? When should I use it? any info on it would be helpful.

RE: Locator Calls

most deffintly, they will help you "LOCATE" a bird without calling and giving him your location.they will sometimes gobble to an owl or crow befor they will a hen call.the owl call works just before light and at sun rise, then go to a crow.
if you haven't heard a bird gobble and you know there are birds around, just let out with a crow call and listen , move a couple hundred yards and blow again.
the owl works real well just before dark at fly up time.they will answer sometimes after full dark. I have had them gobble to an owl at 10:30 pm.

hope this helps.

just try to blow as loud as you can,try to sound like a crow.listen to them the next time you out.
all you want is to try and shock them into gobbling.

I just hit it , kaw,kaw,kaw,then listen

You can shock gobble them at night with a coyote howler very easily, if you'd like to find thier roost tree!!

Owl during early morning/late evening before fly down/up, crow call during the day, and I even have a peacock call that I use when I can't get the birds to respond to the other two. The peacock call will really fire the birds up if the are on the roost.

Good luck!

RE: Locator Calls

I use an owl first thing in the morning and when the crows start yelling, I switch to my crow call. There are various calling sequences to use with either one, for the owl I use this sequence "hoo, hoo, hoo, ha-hoo" & also "who cooks for you and who cooks for all". With the crow, I use just an ordinary three to four crows and then if no response, get aggressive with it. I have also used coyote and as strange as it is, I have used a goose call before, reason being, I was hunting an area that was full of geese, and gobblers were always firing back at the honking noise geese make, so I picked up a goose call and went locating. Good luck!
