spitting and other problems with the mouth call

Last year I bought a 2 pack of Beginner’s diaphragm calls. I trimmed one up to what I thought was a good fit and started practicing. Well I was able to makes some sounds and started getting the hang of it a little bit. Well then I tried the un-trimmed one so see how I could do with that and found out I had trimmed the other call way too much. I then switched to the un-trimmed call for practicing and the one that I trimmed is ruined. These calls have a plastic dome that you place against the roof of your mouth to use. Now I have switched to a single reed regular (no dome) call and I am having some problems. The first is spit flights all over the place (you should see when I try to practice at the computer). Also it seems as if the sounds are much more difficult to make with the regular call and I have to force more air over the call to get it to work. I can yelp okay and cluck a little I still don't think it will convince a tom.

Any help you guys can give would be appreciated, I know there are a lot of post about the mouth calling, I have read most of them in the last month and a half and haven't seen anything to address my problems. I know you guys have a wealth of knowledge to help us new guys out!

Also what is a fighting purr? I have heard guys on TV and tapes do a fast purr with a cut or cluck at the end is that what is known as a fighting purr?

First, if the mouth calls you were using worked for you maybe you should stick with them. If you just want to try something different use a regular double reed diaphragm. And, practice, practice practice. Sometimes they are easier to use. Second, you should never, ever, have spit flying out of your mouth when using one. You are blowing too hard!! Try to find someone in your area to help you. I had to learn the hard way, but finally got the hang of it.

As for the fighting purr it is a loooooong series of hard drawn out purrs that simulates two turkeys fighting. I have tried it, but haven't had any luck with it yet. The ones you heard on TV were just a purr and cluck; this is a contented sound.

the eazest diaphram I have ever used is made by prefection calls.the blue color is the one I use and it works great for "Me"

the fighting purrs: you can get a box call that is called the fighting purr. it is two push pin calls together in one box. you use them with two fingers and it sounds like two birds fighting.
I have had it work 3 or 4 times when nothing else would work.it sometimes will make a gobbler gobble.they will also come to watch the fight and gives you a chance.

the mouth calls takes a lot of pratice, just keep trying. if you get one that works, stick with it and forget the others.as for the spit.you are blowning to hard.
