some calls i made..
heres a link to a few calls i made....figured id show you guys since alot of you guys helped me out on the how toos.....i ordered the wood for the pots from custom sawing...along with glass and slate....they were nice and sent me wood for strikers also.....the 2 green stained strikers i made BY hand with a knife out of wood...the solid green one is maple if my memory is correct....and the green stained top with brown wood shaft is black walnut with something(probably maple) for the top stained green..then 2 strikers i spilt dried logs and carved them out with a knife....paindstaking tast but worth it i think.....the white striker is poplar, and the brown one is black walnut...both were first attempts on a woodlathe...and the shop teacher didnt like it when it started to whistle and said i shouldnt go down any farther...they are both useless....but i tried....didnt want to make the shop teacher mad..hes a good guy and a good friend of mine now.......the slate pot is made from black walnut and stained with tru oil....adn the other pot should have glass in it.....but i broke it many times lol....the pic is a pic of my first turkey taken right after i harvested it.....hope you guys like the pics...thanx for all the help making them last year i think it was if you guys remember....the 2 green strikers played on my knight and hale ol yeller are my secret weapon....i think both my spring birds were called in with them....they never let me down..... heres the link http://client.webshots.com/album/305743080DfqnMj/3

RE: some calls i made..
the slate call sings like a bird....sweet soft call.....thats what i like.....around here most guys call loud and agressive and too often....i take the opposite apporoach and start off very soft and quiet...thats what i like..soft sweet yelps......the glass call was tough to get sounding good due the the sound board.....i made the inside a tad tight....and forgot the washers you are supposta use to set the sound board inplace...so i cut dowel legnths to prop the sound board(piece of glass with my first turkey pic on it) in place....well it sounded bad the first few times...so i made shorter and longer dowle pieces to make it higher and lower from the surface of the glass.....the last time i had it sounding just like my cody glass call.....pretty sweet....glued it back down...and tightened down on the clamp too hard...busted my glass.....never got around to getting a new piece....maybe ill have my shop teacher cut me one....his glass cutting discussion should be coming up....wish he would let me turn my 2 strikers down to proper thinness...they are too thick....and useless....but look decint for my first ones....and if they were thin no doubt they would play....my 2 hand made ones sing great...i love them.....these were my first attempts on the lathe making calls.....cant wait till im older and settled down after college....im betting i have a small woodshop of my own....making my own calls...and probably selling too.....i love wood working....took at it naturally....my shop teacher was very impressed with me....if you look in my pics and see the turkey fan and beard on the wall i made that wood plaque too....and made 2 nice shelves for my mom....her friend offered me 50 bucks a shelf....but i dont have shop anymore!!!!!! i love woodwork and for not doing much of it i did pretty good i think....cant wait to use that slate this spring.....nothing like calling a long beard in with a call i made out of a hunk of wood!

RE: some calls i made..
Nice looking calls! You do fine work.
I have a question, if you don't mind. The picture call, was that made using the actual picture or did you have a topglass sticker made of the picture? I'm curious because I also make calls, but the guy who used to make my topglass stickers doesn't do them anymore. I was wondering if you do use a sticker, who makes it for you? Again, fine work, you should be very proud! Slice |
RE: some calls i made..
nope....i took that picture right in the woods when i got my first turkey....thats an actually picture cut to fit my glass.....thats a bird ill never forget.....figured putting it in a call would make a nice call to look at and bring back the memories.......actually headed back to where i shot him right now to do some scouting and find a few logs to split and maybe make a few strikers before the season........
