Turkey by Bow ?

Quick question....

Say one is to broke to afford a blind, what position is best to be shootin from and still be some what hidden. I.E. sitting, standing, kneeling, ect. I probably will by some camo cloth at the local walmart and make a small cheap blind, probably only stand 3 feet high, but i think that should work. Let me know what you other bowhunters try to shoot from and what u think is best.

thanks

RE: Turkey by Bow ?

I have seen on Denny Gulvas' video where they took their birds with the bow without a blind. What they did was to stand up, behind a tree, Just to the left of the tree, so the tree would hide their right arm moving when they drew back. It worked on the video.

Personally, I've never been able to sit still long enough when hunting from my knees so that I could draw from my knees. Sitting on your rump and drawng would be darn near impossible. So, I'd think standing behind a tree would be a good way to try it. Another way I've done it in the past was to make a natural blind (blowdowns, honeysuckle patches, ect), then sit on a chair behind the natural blind. This was more comfortable, and the blind broke me up pretty well.

Hope this helps,

Slice

I agree with Slice... that's certainly the best way without a blind, allowing you to sit without discomfort and draw undetected when the timing is right. Ahhh, but the PA GC says that using anything other than man-made material to construct a hide consitutes a violation here.

I can't understand that really, after all, the dead branches and such you use don't harm anything living in the woods, plant or otherwise, and there's nothing to pack out. I could see it if you were cutting live branches / plants / small trees and such, but old dead growth shouldn't matter IMHO. The code officer specified otherwise.

I did inquire if finding natural cover, like a blowdown tree with a root canopy exposed would be lawful and was told yes... BUT... only as long as the hunter didn't physically add and manipulate branches, to add to the natural cover. Go figure.

Personally, I think that's an odd law, but you may want to check your state guidelines just in case.

I'd use the material you spoke of in conjunction with natural cover so you have at least a chest high hide while seated. It'll work well for your turkey bow hunt.

Just another reason why I reside in PA, but don't hunt there... I do all of my hunting in MD. Too many odd laws and quirks in PA hunting for my liking. Well worth the $151 for a non-resident MD license.

I'm with ya there Slice... too many fine line laws here. I don't know about the MD turkeys, but I have seen the quality of MD bucks, that just have to be some the biggest bruisers around IMO. It's a five hour ride for me and I've not any connections to hunt there, which is too bad. If I lived closer to the border I'd be there hands down too. Personally, even after growing up here in PA, I'd much rather reside in the southern part of our U. S. of A.

Any method that will let you remain undetected while on the Ground for Deer, will also work for Turkeys. Getting into a suitable Blown Down Top, will work great. The Hard part is not the effectivness of the Camo, or Hide, But getting Drawn on a Bird without detection. Wait till he has a object between himself and your position, and you should be good to go! Good Luck!

RE: Turkey by Bow ?

what i do is find a group of trees...usually 3 that make a triangler shape...then i cut some palm fronds or sweet gum branches and put them around the trees.
i also make a roof out of the branches and palm fronds but that's a lil time consuming but well worth the effort....i usually stock up on the lil chairs that come in a bag from WalMart...about 5 dollars give or take a dollar....the palm frond hides any movement from the waist down and then i have the trees and roof to help cover movement from the upper body.

good luck...hope you find something that works for you.
