410 is definately big enough for turkey's, as long as you get him within it's effective range before you shoot him! Pattern it and find out what a good range is for your particular gun and you should have no problems.

I'm not trying to change your mind about getting a 410 for you son. However he will out grow that gun very quickly. I would suggest using a 20 gauge. They dont kick much harder than a 410 and they have a heavier payload.

I got my first .410 when I was about 8 years old. I just used it rabbit hunting a couple of weeks ago. Rolled a big ol' buck rabbit right over his tail at 25 yards. I've never tried it on turkeys, but I want to. Just get him in close. Most of the turkeys I've killed throughout my 25 years of hunting them have been killed within range of a .410.
Make sure of your shot and good luck.

im 19yrs old, and am DEFINITELY not a big person, 145 soakin wet, and i started hunting at about 11-12yrs of age, with a 20ga. Never had a problem with it as far as recoil, and i have always been small in stature for my age, especially at your son's age.
Have him use a 20ga, its a wiser move, plus a 20 is a more functional gun for other game, not knocking the .410 but it just doesnt have the versatility of the 20ga, plus you can get turkey shells and choles for the 20ga, you wont find any of that for the .410.

I took my first turkey with a .410 more than 20 years ago, when I was about 10 years old. The shot was about 15 yards, and the 20 lb gobbler couldnt tell the difference if I had shot him with a 10 gauge, it was a clean quick kill. I would say he would do fine to use the .410 out to about 20 - 25 yards, if his gun patterns well. But as some have said, if you have to buy a gun anyway, you might look into a youth model 20 ga, or maybe even a cheap 20 gauge automatic, like the Charles Daly, In the long run he will get a lot more use out of the 20 and it dont kick much worse. Either way, congrats on getting him onto the addictive sport of chasin turkeys.
Mr longbeard, If you really want one, I could shoot a turkey target at 20 yards with my .410 just for fun, and see what it does, it does pattern very well.

a .22 with ratshot is big enough at 2 yards, but why bother?
an auto 20 will kick less than a single shot .410, and is versatile enough to double as a deer gun when he/she is ready.
