Patterning target - Your opinions please?

I hope this works....Please give me your opinion on my pattern. Please excuse the "hot pink" highlighting for the pellets. It's the only way to get them to show up.

The target was shot with a Remington 870 Super Mag with an Xtra Full RemChoke using Federal Mag Shok (no wad flight control) 3" #6 Remington Magnum Turkey Loads at 20 yards. Here is the link:

I saw 13 in the spine and brain, that will kill him DEAD. although I would like to see a lot more at 20 yards. how did you do at 30 yards,or did you try ?

try some Winchester # 6 copper plated in the 3". try at 20 30 and 35 yards. 35 is as far as Iwill shoot one. besides it's all about getting them in close.

also it seems the main pattern is a little right.

to be sure try anout 3 shots at each distance with each different brand shells.

then you will know for sure if it is the gun , shell , or you .

Not wanting to throw stones at your pattern, but did you mean to say the distance was 40 yards? If that is a 20 yard test, I'd say you should look to a different shot combo. That looks more like an average 35 - 40 yard target pattern IMHO.

Not a bad pattern Kitsap..................I would be interested to see what it will do @ 30 & 40.

I would have to see a 30 and 40 yard pattern. It would definatly kill a bird at 20 but it looks a little sparse for that short of a distance. You should be able to get that pattern and number of pellets at 30 yards.

Little confused did you shoot Fed loads or Rem loads.. Really dosent matter both loads suck... Try some Win High Velocity #5 turkey loads and a Remington super full extended turkey choke;)

KSC I really don't want to be negitive hear but that is not a good pattern for a turkey gun[:o]

At 20 yards your pattern should be so tight that you would have a hard time counting all the hits in the vitals:)

My gun will obliterate a turkey target at 20 and 30 yards.. My 40 yard pattern is better than that...

I hope you get the bugs worked out:D

Just for comparison... here's an old 30 yard target I had in the pattern box...

The pic tells me that choke is a bit too tight... a few holes here and there, but the shot center is well concentrated.

I've owned 870's and know your gun will do better that what your link shows.

id agree if that was 20 yards id keep tinkering around....20 yards thats a dead bird....but by 30+ that pattern might not kill the bird...trial and error.....its what its all about when it comes to patterning.....20yards a good turkey pattern will mess the target up pretty bad....id keep searching....unless you know you can get them within 30yds.......i personally like more confidance in my pattern then that.....

Im always amazed at these discussions. Statements that at 20 yards you shouldn't be able to count pellets, and that seemingly the goal is a tight pattern at 40 plus yards...Ive killed a lot of turkeys and I have never considered a 40 plus yard shot.

I believe that we have set people up for failure. Too tight a patern at 20-30 yards will lead to misses and wounded birds. Better to know what the gun is doing and take the shot when the bird fits the pattern for a clean kill.

Just my opinion but all the focus on super tight patters and shots over 40 yards is silly.

I'm not trying to stir the pot or anything but I have to side with wooddust on this subject. I don't think most shots are going to occur at 40 yds. That is nearly half the distance of a football field! And remember it doesn't take 100 pellets in a ten inch circle to kill a turkey. Many turkeys have been killed with only a handful of pellets to the head.

What is your maximum range going to be? Theres nothing wrong with limiting your shots to 30 yards but I guarentee you will have many birds hanging up at the 40 yard mark. Especially in more open areas such as fields. I bring my birds in as close as possible most of the time but when they hangup at 40 yards , (Which is alot) I like the thought of a clean kill at 40 yards. Its all a personal preference. Just know what your gun will do at 20, 30
and 40 yards so you will know your maximum effective range in case that bird doesnt quite make it to the 30 yard line.

The original question was asking if it was a good pattern or not. At 20 yards sure it is a good pattern for killing a turkey. But it is not a good turkey hunting pattern.
