What ever choke you decide on I would definetly start out with Win HV #5's if you choose to go lead:)

I don't know how much money you are looking at spending but the Undertaker by HS Strut is a pretty decent choke for about $20.00

RE: Mossberg 500 HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have a mossberg 500......i have tried #4 shot, #5 shot ...i got awesome patterns with the #5's @35 yds and closer........winchester supreme, double x magnum turkley loads, 3'', 2 oz. loads.....it's never let me down......;)
i personally use the factory full choke, the turkey choke at close range has too tight of a pattern , i believe for me , it's better that they spread out a lil....;)

Thanks, so you think the #5 would work the best? How far can this gun shoot that load effectively?

Thanks

RE: Mossberg 500 HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last season I was using the factory XX Turkey choke with the 3" 2oz Win Supreme #4's. It would put around 10-15 pellets in the turkey head target at 40 yards. It was a .670 choke. This year I bought the Undertaker, and will be patterning the same Win Supreme loads, along with Win Supreme #5's and the new Federal Mag Shok Flitecontrol #5's as well. I will shoot whatever patterns best. A lot of my turkey hunting this year will be longer distance than last season so I want to feel comfortable shooting 45 yards this year.

i wont go past 35 yds. so any further than that, you would have to find out, but i wouldnt take a shot over 40 max.......if you are thinking of shooting any farther than 35 yds., i would get a turkey choke......but you want that bird as close as you can get him.........

RE: Mossberg 500 HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I use the mossberg 500. I recently purchased the Mossberg XXfull choke and tested out a few shells with this. The Federal Magshok with flite control wads (#5 shot) gave me awesome patterns at 35 and 40 yards. At 40 yards I averaged around 25 in the head / neck vitals and a very uniform pattern around that. The winchesters did pretty good also but not as good as the federals. Also the HEavy weight federals didnt perform very well for me.

I use the Mossberg factory turkey choke. It patterns very well with 3" Winchester #6 and Remington #5 turkey loads.

:D
Still have my 500 Moss 12 ga. and I use:

3" Whinchester Heavy Load #5's in the Undertaker H.S. that others on this site recomended to me. Bass Pro has it for $16 but found it later at Wal Mart for $14. Did a feild test on a tree at around 40 yards on a plastic bottle and I loved the pattern I got not only on the bottle but the tree as well.;)

Get a Hastings extended choke tube, and 3 inch with #4 shot.

RE: Mossberg 500 HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of the best lead shot 40 yard patterns I've seen, (not a Hevi-shot load), was fired from a Mossberg 500 pump. The choke tube was a Hastings non-ported extended turkey tube, in a .665 constriction, using Winchester High Velocity, (black box), 3" Turkey loads of # 5 shot in the 1 3/4 ounce payload. The choke tube's affordable, (about 23 dollars), as were the shells at under 10 bucks a box. A very lethal combination in that gun. #6 shot in the same load works well too, but you give up some down range energy with the smaller shot size. I'd stick with the 5's.
