Patterns

Hey guys IYO what is a good turkey pattern at 30 and 40 yards, I mean pellets in the head and neck. Right now I am getting 50 pellets in the head at 30 and at 40 I am getting 30+, this is with an 870 20 gauge, jellyhead choke, and winchester 3 inch #4. Thanks, Spence.

Sounds like you got a shooter now!!! Those are some impressive numbers in the head at both distances for a 20 gauge!!;)

Very dead bird. Don't hink you want to get much tighter. Lots of birds shot under 15 yards. No use haveing your pattern the size of a quarter at ten yards.

Well thanks guys sure boosts my confidence, I haven't gotten a bird yet. Last year I passed on a bearded hen at 15 yrds and misjudged the distance of a tom that was 35 yrds away. What do you think of a 40 yard shot with the gun? I wan to keep my shots cat 30 yards or less but in case of an emergency (ie, he is spooked or about leave etc.) should i take him or not? Thanks a lot, Spence.

Pattern your gun at 40 and see. Don't know what else to say. Sounds good so far though.

If ya can, post your 40 yard pattern pic. Could evaluate it better that way. From the sounds of things though, using #4 shot, (lots of kinetic engery from size), 30 + in the head and neck at 40 paces equals a very do-able distance.

From what I've read I think he is pretty much done patterning:eek: Sounds like another candidate for the NWTF still target champion ship;) And with #4's

Thanks guys, i must have gotten lucky, I was trying kent #5 turkey loads, and federal #5 turkey, both of which patterned horribly, i decided to put these loads in and they shoot great. They aren't even specific turkey loads just premium, copper plated, buffered 3 inch game loads i use for jacks. Take Care, Spence.
