Under the roast, too much competition?
Hi, my dad and i are the only ones hunting turkey this spring. Last year I set up almost under the roast un detected. So day light came, and i started clucking around a little, but all the toms went the other way? what should i do? I know where they roast, but is it good to get under it? Also there are lots and lots of hens in our woods and every time i get a gobbler coming he intersepts a real hen and takes off after her instead of coming in to me.. how should i approach this this spring

I wouldn't set up directly inder a roost. You get too close your chances of getting busted are pretty good.
I might set right up under a roast ,that way I could catch the drippings in my mouth.

Typically setting up between 50-100 yds isn't considered too far. I know it sounds far but most turkey hunting experts say getting in too close is not good because you're too easily detected. The birds have excellent hearing and if he's eager enough he'll come to you.

Try to set up no less than 100 yds. Don't call on the roost! Unless there is a hen calling the other way agressively than wait till about fly down than try to call agressively, to p-off the hen and maybe she'll come to you and draw the gobbler with her. Odds the gobbler is familiar with her because he bred her the day before or heard her at fly up time and is going to follow her today. Killed a lot of gobblers by calling agressively to the hen.

what ya do...is get set up an have anouther guy go 500 yards away and almost straight away.
have him ONLY do the calling...alota times the hens lead the toms away from hens....so therfore they might go towards you....Worked for me a few times.
