I had this question before.

I guess I had it worded wrong.

But what I wanted to know is.

What type of wood finish could you put on a box call ?

None, if you use the box. It will kill the sound.

I've never put finish on a box call before, but I've put finish on many slate calls. I would think the same type finish I use on the slates would work on the box. Use any non-oil based polyprop finish and I think it would work.

A finish will certainly affect the sound.....will it kill it? I dunno, but consider how much emphasis guitar makers (luthiers) place on the finish of an instrument and you'll see its no joke, it will affect the sound. I would thing a light tung oil finish would not harm it too much. You can also buy varnishes made for musical intsruments. I would guess those to be same.
