Custom Calls
#3

The only true custom calls I've ever used were ones I made myself (wingbone and turtle shell/cedar). There's a diaphram call made by a guy in Conway, AR that is one of the best I've ever used. Used to get them at Mack's in Perryville, AR but it closed. Don't know what I'll do now.

As far as friction calls goI would think that custom calls would be superior, due to the time and effort puy into each call for tuning, but this is only my opinion and i am really a diaphram user. As far as diaphram mouth calls go, I found that custom calls or ones made by me for myself are alot more consistant. I got to find that buying calls that I liked seem to vary so much I might buy 5 calls of the same kind before I got the sound I had with the prior call of the same make.
Just my opinion.

Good question there Highknob!I know guys that would swear that there isn't anything better than a custom made call.As far as the beauty and workmanship of the call I would have to agree. But as far as them sounding so much better than some of the mass produced calls I'd have to disagree. To me duck calls are the same way.Just my opinion but really what makes a good call is what it sounds like not how many hours it took to make or how pretty it is.Dont get me wrong I've heard some of the sweetest custom made calls around these parts, but I think some of the most popular calls on the market made by well known manufacturers sound every bit as good.I've been in I dont know how many turkey calling contests including the grand nationals and most guys were using mass produced calls with a few making minor adjustments to them.I have a couple of custom calls myself, but my field grade twin hen made by the late Ben Rogers Lee is what goes to the woods with me.

heck I have a walnut glass call Paul Nutski gave me years ago, it sounds great but the funny thing is I never use it anymore for hunting.
For hunting I use Primos, Quaker Boy or Butski's over the counter stuff. heck they all sound good & work really well.......I will say this the old original Quaker Boy Boat Paddle was one sweet sounding call in the woods! Turkeys love that one!
Last year I tried out a lot of Primos stuff & will use it again this year, I was really happy with the sound & tone of the calls.
I do still use a wingbone I made years ago, it just sounds good!
